The newly organized U17 Asian Cup, hosted by Saudi Arabia, saw its group stage conclude with a dramatic turn of events. China’s men’s U17 football team faced a must-win match against Qatar in the final round, securing a 2-0 victory. Meanwhile, Indonesia lost 1-3 to Japan. As a result, China jumped from the bottom of the group to second place on goal difference, miraculously advancing to the knockout stage. They will now face tournament hosts Saudi Arabia in the quarterfinals.
In the first two group matches, China suffered narrow defeats, losing 0-1 to Indonesia and 1-2 to Japan, leaving them with zero points and at the bottom of the table. However, with Qatar defeating Indonesia 2-0 in the second round, the group’s qualification scenario became chaotic, keeping China’s hopes alive.
For China to advance, only one scenario was possible: they had to beat Qatar, while Indonesia lost to Japan. This would create a three-way tie on points (9, 3, 3, 3), forcing a comparison of head-to-head records among China, Qatar, and Indonesia. In the first half, China applied pressure with 13 shots, five on target, earning four corners and creating three clear chances before He Sifan broke the deadlock with a curling shot. In the second half, Zhang Bailin added a header to seal the 2-0 win.
According to tournament rules, in case of a tie, head-to-head results are considered first. Since China, Qatar, and Indonesia each won one match against each other, the tiebreaker moved to goal difference. China’s superior goal difference secured them second place in the group and a spot in the U17 World Cup.
This marks the first time a Chinese men’s national youth team has qualified for a FIFA world championship since 2005, when the U17 and U20 teams participated in their respective tournaments.
With all group matches in Groups A and B completed, the quarterfinal pairings are now set:

Japan vs. Tajikistan
Additionally, according to the latest 2025 edition of the Football Athlete Technical Grade Management Regulations released by the Chinese Football Association, teams that reach the top eight of the U17 Asian Cup will see at least five players awarded the “National Master Athlete” title. Further progress earns even more spots. Players with this title can apply for university admission without taking the national college entrance exam (Gaokao), provided they meet minimum playing time requirements—at least 40% of total match minutes in the tournament.
