Following Zhejiang Golden Bulls’ 2-0 sweep by Shenzhen in the CBA quarterfinals, the team’s internal tensions have come to light. Wu Qian’s wife took to social media to express her dissatisfaction with the team’s handling of her husband’s playing time.
In a video posted after the elimination, she wrote, “Am I being too direct? I’m just asking. I don’t want to reveal internal matters, but I’ve been restrained. I understand if he plays poorly and gets fewer minutes, but being completely benched is unacceptable.” Her comments came after Wu failed to play a single minute in the first game of the series despite being in the lineup, and then played only five minutes in the second game, taking two shots and missing both.
Wu’s performance this season has been a steep decline. The former MVP and team captain averaged just 6.2 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, with a field goal percentage of 31.8% and a three-point percentage of 29.4% – both career lows. His playing time dropped from around 30 minutes per game to just over 20. While other veteran guards like Liu Xiaoyu (born 1989) and Guo Ailen (born 1992, before his injury) have maintained efficiency, Wu’s sharp decline has been stark.
The team’s foreign head coach has shown no sentimentality, judging players solely on performance. Wu’s maximum-salary contract expires at the end of July. The public spat may complicate negotiations for a new deal, likely a veteran contract with a reduced role. It remains unclear whether Wu’s wife acted on her own or with his knowledge. Either way, Zhejiang and Wu must now discuss their future together, which could also include retirement.
