Kento Shiokai “Stays on the Fringes” – VfL Wolfsburg Coach Reveals Language Barrier Hurdles

Kento Shiokai, the Japan international forward at VfL Wolfsburg, has found himself struggling to fully integrate into the squad, according to head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl. The manager admitted that the 21-year-old is “a little bit on the outside of the group,” largely due to language difficulties.

“He needs to initiate conversations himself,” Hasenhüttl said when asked about Shiokai’s situation. “To be utilized effectively, communication is essential. He tends to be more reserved, but he has to break that barrier.”

Shiokai, who joined Wolfsburg in the summer, acknowledged the challenge, stating, “I have to communicate more on my own. If I want to be given a chance, I need to step out of my comfort zone.” The forward made a brief substitute appearance in Wolfsburg’s recent 2-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt, which extended the club’s winless run to 12 matches. The absence of fellow Japan international Ritsu Doan (injured) was also noted in the match.

Despite the team’s struggles and his limited playing time, Shiokai remains determined. “I don’t think I’m inferior at all. But if I don’t produce results, I won’t get chances,” he said after the game. The young striker, who made his senior Japan debut earlier this year, is aiming to fight for a regular spot as Wolfsburg battles near the relegation zone in the Bundesliga.
