The Chinese men’s table tennis team has suffered two consecutive losses at the London World Team Championships, falling to South Korea and Sweden, putting them in a precarious position. Currently, only Wang Chuqin can hold his own in the squad. Lin Shidong has lost three matches, Liang Jingkun two, and Zhou Qihao one. However, a new star has emerged for the Chinese men’s team in 2026, claiming two WTT men’s singles titles this year and boasting a record that, within the national team, is second only to Wang Chuqin.

Wen Ruibo’s world ranking has surged to No. 11, making him the third-highest ranked Chinese male player, trailing only world No. 1 Wang Chuqin and No. 6 Lin Shidong. If world rankings aren’t the sole criterion, Wen Ruibo’s tournament results in 2026 also surpass every other Chinese male player except Wang Chuqin.

Wen Ruibo’s rise began in January 2026. He reached the final of the Doha Star Challenge, losing to Zhou Qihao for the runner-up spot, but then won the men’s singles title at the subsequent Muscat Regular Challenge. He later competed in the European Champions League, causing a major upset by defeating Fan Zhendong 3-2. Wen Ruibo truly made headlines at the 2026 Chongqing Champions, where he defeated three top-10 players—Moregård (world No. 2), Qiu Dang (world No. 10), and Tomokazu Harimoto (world No. 3)—before falling to Felix Lebrun in the final. Notably, Fan Zhendong is the 2024 Olympic gold medalist, and Moregård is the silver medalist; Wen Ruibo has beaten both.
He also participated in the 2026 ITTF World Cup, advancing from the group stage to the Round of 16, where he lost to Lin Yun-ju. Remarkably, Wen Ruibo and Wang Chuqin were the only Chinese men’s players to advance from the group stage at the World Cup. Liang Jingkun lost both his group matches to West and Ovtcharov, finishing last with 0 wins. Zhou Qihao beat Kawakami but lost to Franziska, finishing second with 1 win. Chen Yuanyu beat Shudi but was swept by Qiu Dang, also exiting early. Wen Ruibo’s World Cup performance clearly outshone Liang Jingkun and Zhou Qihao.
In April 2026, Wen Ruibo won the men’s singles title at the Taiyuan Regular Challenge, and also claimed the men’s doubles title with Li Hechen. In a recent internal team competition, he defeated Xiang Peng 3-1. Unfortunately, during the London World Championships selection trials, Wen Ruibo reached the final twice but lost to Zhou Qihao and Xiang Peng, failing to secure a spot. After Fan Zhendong voluntarily withdrew, the coaching staff opted to give the experienced Liang Jingkun the final spot.
In hindsight, bringing Wen Ruibo might have strengthened the team’s performance at the World Championships, given his impressive record of victories over top-tier players throughout 2026.
