Berecet (colt, 3yo, trained by Takashi Saito at Ritto, by Epiphaneia) will race under Yūichi Kitamura again in the Grade 1 Japan Derby on May 31 at Tokyo Racecourse (2,400 meters turf). The horse finished second in the Grade 2 Kyoto Shimbun Hai on May 9, earning enough prize money to secure a spot in the Derby. The announcement was made by Sunday Thoroughbred Club on May 13.
Berecet is the first foal of Chronogenesis, a four-time G1 winner including the 2020 Arima Kinen. After his runner-up performance in the Kyoto Shimbun Hai, he has been training on-site at the stable.
Last year’s Derby winner Croix de Nord was also trained by Takashi Saito and ridden by Yūichi Kitamura. The same combination now aims for back-to-back Derby victories.
